WHY THE NAME BUCKET TOWN?

"THE COLONY AT HINGHAM, LIVING AT PEACE WITH THEIR NEIGHBORS, SOON BECAME REMARKABLE FOR MANUFACTURING THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOODEN BUCKETS ON THE CONTINENT, FROM WHICH IT DERIVES IT'S PRESENT CLASSIC NAME."

HISTORY OF BUCKETTOWN, 1816

HINGHAM’S INDUSTRIOUS PAST

For three centuries, generations of skilled, entrepreneurial Hingham craftsmen forged a local economy lucrative and enduring enough to make their own town synonymous with their best-known product: Buckets.

Boys learned the craft from their fathers, uncles, and grandfathers, and an extraordinary cooperative network of industry formed largely on the bonds of family. It profoundly influenced Hingham's historical trajectory and its culture.
